Diogo Costa Gonçalves
Began his academic career in 2004 and has been an Associate Professor at Faculdade de Direito de Lisboa (University of Lisbon, Faculty of Law) since January 2023.
Costa Gonçalves also collaborates in Postgraduate and Master’s courses with Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Catholic University of Portugal) and with other higher education institutions in Brazil and Angola.
His areas of research and professional practice are centred on Private Law, in particular on Law of Obligations and Commercial Companies and Capital Markets Law. He also develops research work related to Civil Law History and Methodology and Philosophy of Law.
In addition to Portuguese jurisdiction, Costa Gonçalves frequently works with jurisdictions in Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, as a legal expert, arbitrator and in scientific research projects.
BIOGRAPHY
Diogo Costa Gonçalves was born in Lisbon in 1980.
He graduated from Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa in 2003. In 2008, Costa Gonçalves completed his Master’s degree, defending his dissertation Fusão, Cisão e Transformação de Sociedades Comerciais – A posição jurídica dos sócios e a delimitação do statuo viae (Almedina, 2009).
In 2014, he submitted his doctoral thesis Pessoa coletiva e sociedades comerciais – Dimensão problemática e coordenadas sistemáticas da personificação jurídico-privada (Almedina, 2015).
Since 2010, Costa Gonçalves has been conducting regular research periods at Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg.
His most relevant publications deal with General Theory of Civil Law, Law of Obligations, Company Law, Capital Markets and Arbitration Law.
Costa Gonçalves is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Centro de Investigação de Direito Privado (CIDP).
Alongside his academic career, he has an intense activity as a Jurisconsult and Arbitrator, working, in addition to Portugal, with jurisdictions in several Portuguese-speaking countries (especially with jurisdictions in Brazil, Angola and Mozambique).

ARBITRAL EXPERIENCE
Over the past decade, Costa Gonçalves has served on more than 25 arbitral tribunals, either as co-arbitrator or president. Most arbitrations have been domestic and ad hoc. International arbitrations have been subject to ICC Rules and UNCITRAL Rules.
Disputes have mostly involved issues of Civil Law, Commercial Law, Securities, Corporate Law, Public-Private Partnerships, Patents and Industrial Property.
Costa Gonçalves has also acted as legal expert in several ICC arbitrations and before foreign courts, with reference to Portuguese, Brazilian, Angolan and Mozambican jurisdictions.
